Administration Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Court Actions
Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.
An analysis argued that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.
Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
